About Racquetball
This fast-paced indoor sport is played with a hollow rubber ball and a strung racquet. Games are typically played on a four-walled court, where players serve and return the ball until one player fails to make a legal return. It’s easy to learn, great for all skill levels, and an excellent full-body workout that improves agility, reflexes, and cardiovascular endurance.
Racquetball starts with a serve, then players take turns hitting the ball against the front wall. The ball must bounce only once before being returned, and it must hit the front wall before hitting the floor again. Games are often played to 15 points. Doubles and singles are both popular formats. Matches move quickly, so positioning and anticipation matter just as much as power. New players often focus on simply keeping rallies going, while more experienced players tend to work on shot placement and strategy.
The court is 40 ft long, 20 ft wide, and 20 ft high, with service and receiving boxes marked on the floor and a front wall you must hit. It’s surprisingly intuitive once you step inside.
You’ll need a racquet, a racquetball (smaller and bouncier than a tennis ball), protective eyewear (strongly recommended), and court shoes with non-marking soles. Beginners don’t need specialized gear to get started. Many players begin with entry-level racquets and upgrade later as their playing style develops. Comfortable athletic clothing that allows free movement is usually sufficient.
